Information is everywhere. Ask Google, ask AI, and you'll get an answer. But you don't learn a plant from a screen. You learn it by smelling it, tasting it, making something with it. You don't forget a flavour. That's the one thing all the AI in the world can't give you: experience.
It's a bit like a new friendship. You don't learn everything on the first coffee. You take your time, listen to the stories, and notice how this person (err, plant) makes you feel, and whether it's good for you. It's a relationship, and relationships take time.
Maybe you've wanted to try herbs or make your own simple recipes, but didn't know where to find good-quality herbs and supplies, or the little rules for drying, tinctures and more. Maybe you're outside and don't know where to start identifying plants.
Playing with Plants is a slower way to learn. Each month, we explore a practical home-herbalism skill and make something together. You'll learn by doing, practise between lessons, and build confidence while putting together a personal apothecary made for you.
And it's fun. You'll keep a plant passport of what you try, what works, and what surprises you. By October, you'll have a small home apothecary you made yourself, and the confidence to keep going.
Beginners welcome. Bring your curiosity.
We'll work with teas, kitchen preparations, drying and storing herbs, tinctures, infused oils and salves. Along the way, we'll get to know plants, find reliable information and good-quality supplies, and learn the practical details that help you make and document your preparations with care.
We'll also slow down and simply spend time with plants. Not every relationship with a plant has to end in a jar or a teacup. Sometimes the gift is in noticing: sitting with a plant, using your senses, getting to know its character and how it makes you feel. Drawing on my training in forest therapy and plant connection, we'll make room for that quieter way of knowing, too.
I want to keep the craft of home herbalism alive, and help dispel some of the fear around working with plants. We'll make room for curiosity and enjoyment while learning how to use herbs responsibly, including the limits of home herbalism.

Each month, you'll receive:
You'll also receive four personal project reviews over the year.
The course is designed to get you making things in your own kitchen. It's taught in English, with the French name of every plant alongside. Everyone is welcome.
For the online course, you gather your own ingredients. Each month's pack includes a simple supply list with where to find good-quality herbs locally and online, and many months use things you may already have in your kitchen. Ingredients are included at the in-person workshops.
Each month, I'll offer an optional in-person workshop at Emmanuel in Cowansville, on the second Wednesday at 7 pm. We'll explore one part of the monthly lesson more deeply, with time to practise, experiment and ask questions. Anyone can come to a single workshop; course students pay half price.
You can take the online course on its own, add individual workshops as you go, or choose All-In for the course plus all ten in-person workshops.

We'll make herbal gifts together: a sleep pillow, a winter balm and a floral bath tea, with a digestive bitters demo. You'll go home with a recipe booklet too.
Open to everyone, $50 with supplies included ($25 for course students).
We begin in January 2027. Starting then gives you the full ten-month experience, learning and practising as the seasons change.
You can also join as late as June, catch up on the earlier lessons, and complete the course by October.
When you complete all ten lessons, you'll receive a Fleurbain Playing with Plants Certificate of Completion in home herbalism.
If we reach 20 students, we'll finish with an optional retreat and graduation weekend in the Eastern Townships in October. Dates, details and the separate cost will be announced.
Ten monthly course packs, live Zoom demos, plant passport, community and four project reviews.

Enrol by December 31, 2026, and receive a free year of Sève, my app for daily nature connection. Between lessons, Sève gives you a small invitation to spend time with the natural world.
Some people would love to join but are stretched right now. If you'd like to help, you can gift a workshop seat ($50) or put money toward a course spot for someone in our community. I'll pass it on quietly to someone who really wants to be there. Send me a note through my contact page to gift a seat.
I'm Tamara Schmidt. I've been fascinated by medicinal plants since I was 26. Since 2010, I've been a clinical herbal therapist, and a certified forest therapy guide since 2020. Over the years, I've made bespoke skin care products for clients, and I've studied plant connection: what it means to relate to a plant through presence and attention, not only through what it does. I studied in French schools, so you'll find the French name of each plant alongside the English.
My calling is to remind people of the goodness found in our relationship with the natural world. I teach with fun and curiosity, grounded in good information and direct experience, so you can bring more beauty and nourishment into your everyday life.
This course is educational and does not replace medical care or individual medical advice.
Full refund until January 15, 2027, after you've seen the first lesson. After that, refunds aren't available, but you can transfer your place to someone else or finish with a later group. Payment plans are a commitment to the full course price.
Workshops: cancel at least 48 hours ahead for a credit toward another workshop. If I cancel a workshop or the course, you'll receive a full refund.
To join, send me a note through my contact page and tell me which option you'd like. I'll reply with a welcome email confirming your exact total and how to pay: Interac e-Transfer in Canada, or a secure online payment link outside Canada. Your spot is confirmed once payment arrives.
I'll send your welcome and the details for getting started in January.
